Mary, am I right when I assume that your planned itinerary is:

Japan - Shanghai - US

If I'm right and your planned stay in Shanghai area is around 30 hours, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, so you don't need any kind of visa. It is important that you bring your tickets in hard copy and preferably your booking accommodation.

Have in mind that your flight from Japan to Shanghai should not have any additional stop within mainland China and your flight from Shanghai to US, should not have any additional stop in mainland China and in Japan too.
