About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Japan to Shanghai then to Budapest

Do I need a visa, if I fly from Japan to Shanghai to see a Trade fair for 4 days and then I fly to Budapest directly from Shanghai?

Your itinerary, in case that you have mentioned all the stops within the itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. So, you don't need any kind of visa.
