About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA-Shanghai-Japan

If I'm traveling from USA to Shanghai direct and staying 1 night in a hotel in Shanghai then the next day boarding a cruiseship from Shanghai and the first stop after Shanghai is in Japan would I qualify for 144 visa waiver? It looks like I would qualify, I just question how the airlines handle that when you check-in if you dont' have a visa, does something need to be documented in advance?

Yes, you qualify. If Japan grants visa free entry for US citizens, you don't need a visa. The airlines will check it in the TIMATIC database.
