About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Shanghai 144 hours visa free policy

Hello :)

I have a return flight from Amsterdam to SH and therefore received a single entry visa for Mainland China. As I will take the train to Guangzhou, I thought of going as well with the train to Hong Kong, stay there for 3 days and then fly back to SH. My return journey will therefore look like that: flight from Hong Kong to SH and the next day from SH to Amsterdam. Can I apply for that for the 144-hour Visa-free Transit in SH. I would like to leave the airport between the two flights.

Yes, you are allowed to do that. Basically, your journeys will be as far as Chinese authorities are concerned:

Amsterdam - Shanghai - Guangzhou - Hong Kong - this portion will be covered by a single entry visa

I suggest that you take a high speed train departing at 08:00 because this is the fastest one. Also, I suggest that you book this train in advance because it is possible that the tickets sell out at the day of your departure. You can do it through Travel China Guide website or some other.

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Amsterdam

This itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit, but I would suggest you to make your flight arragmenets that will result in at least 25 hours in Shanghai (from your scheduled arrival until your scheduled departure). The reason is simple... If your stop in Shanghai is shorter than 24 hours, you are covered by 24 hours visa free transit, but nobody gurantees that you will be allowed to exit the airport because the issuing of 24 hours free entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration authorities. On the other hand, if your stay is at least 25 hours, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit and you will be definitely allowed to exit the airport.
