visa necessary in Shanghai

We arrive in Hong Kong from the United States on American Airlines for 3 days and will then join a Holland American cruise to Japan, Taiwan, and Philippines. The cruise ends in Shanghai, and we will return on American Airlines to the United States the same day we arrive in Shanghai (We are both U.S. citizens). Do we need a visa or do we qualify to use the 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China, or some other special program?
