About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa clarification for Canadian passport holder

I'm taking a 7 days Japan cruise from Shanghai and back. Will be arriving on the start day of the cruise and will leave the same day of the embarkation date. I 'm a Canadian passpot holder and would like to know if I need a visa even if I'm not going around Shanghai. Basically, it will be airport to cruise port abd vice versa.

Benita, you didn't mention from where you will arrive in Shanghai and where you will depart from Shanghai after your cruise and that is very important detail when we talk about visa free transit. OK, I will assume that this will be Canada and you will correct me if I'm wrong. So, in case that your itineraries look like this:

Canada - Shanghai - Japan
Japan - Shanghai - Canada

You are definitely eligible for 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai twice. Anyway, to confirm the eligibility, your itinerary has to fulfill the following requirements:

- Your flight from Canada to Shanghai should not have any additional landings within mainland China and Japan
- Your flight from Shanghai to Canada should not have any additional landings within mainland China and Japan
- Your cruise should not have its first port call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your cruise should not have its last port call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China

If all the requirements are met, I can reconfirm that you are definitely eligible for 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai twice.
