About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

visa exeption- cruise

hi, me my partner and our baby are flying to shanghai in August and staying for 3 nights then going on a week long cruise leaving from shanghai around Japan. We then return to shanghai port and go straight to the airport for our flight home to the UK. would we get an exemption for transit? Do we get the 72hour one on arrival to shanghai and then do we need another one (a 24hour one?!?!)when we return to shanghai port after our cruise to fly home? Or so we get one single exemption for transit just for the 3 nights we are there at the start and not need one when we return from our cruise to fly home?? Very confused- please help!

In principle, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit (144 hours has replaced 72 hours a couple of years ago) during your first stop in Shanghai and for 24 hours visa free transit during your second stops. Anyway, there are several conditions to be fulfilled, although I assume that your itinerary has met all of them. They are:

- Your flights to and from Shanghai should not have any additional landing(s) within mainland China
- Your first port call, immediately after your departure from Shanghai, should not be in mainland China
- Your last port call, immediately before your arrival in Shanghai, should not be in mainland China

So, you can easily check the above mentioned details and if you are fine with them, you are perfectly qualified for 144 and 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai and you should not look elsewhere for any additional explanation.
