About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa? Or the 24hrs visa Free applies to my trip?

I’m going to Mongolia from New York. With a 20hrs layover in Beijing.
USA passport.

If Beijing is your only stop within mainland China and you are in transit between two different countries, you are definitely qualified for 24 hours visa free transit in Beijing. Your layover is very long one, so you will probably want to exit the airport. In that case, you will apply for 24 hours free entry permit upon landing in Beijing. You should enclose your onward ticket and your accommodation booking in hard copy and your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are almost certain. Anyway, you should always have in mind that the issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration official.
