About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I enjoy 72h visa free transit?

Hi, I am traveling to Taiwan from Australia, staying in Kaohsiung for 3 days then flying to Shanghai for 2 nights then flying home to Australia from Shanghai. Will the 72 hour waiver apply for me when I arrive in Shanghai given that I will be in Taiwan for 3 days before Shanghai. I think Taiwan is considered part of greater china which may complicate things.

If those are you only stops, i.e. Australia - Taiwan - Shanghai - Australia, you are definitely qualified for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. 144 hours has replaced 72 hours a couple of years ago. Your visit and stay in Taiwan will produce no effect on your eligibility nor will you encounter problems of any kind. You should just take care that your flight from Shanghai to Australia doesn't have any additional landing within mainland China and Taiwan.
