About:Shanghai 15-day Visa-free Policy for Cruise Tour Groups

Australian fly to HK, cruise to Japan and then Shanghai, stay 1 night and fly back HK

Do we need China visa with Australia passport take cruise from HK to Japan and then cruise to SH, stay 1 night in Shanghai and then fly back to HK? thanks

If you don't stop in other mainland cities, then you are eligible for the 24-hour or 144-hour free visa transit in Shanghai. So no visa is needed.
