About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Cruise - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai

We arrive in Shanghai and have an overnight stay at a local hotel, following day we join a cruise ship which sails out of Shanghai to Japan for 7 nights returning to Shanghai. We are being transferred back to the airport and leaving Shanghai within 12 hours of arrival.

Will we need a visa or will we be covered by the 72 hour visa exemption?

For your first arrival in Shanghai, you will be granted 144 hours visa free transit and for your second arrival, 24 hours visa free transit because you will almost certainly remain in Shanghai for less than 24 hours. Anyway, your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:

- Your arriving flight to Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and Japan
- After your cruise departure from Shanghai, your first port call should not be in mainland China
- Just before your arrival by cruise to Shanghai, your port call should not be in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to a third country should not have any additional landing within mainland China and Japan

If this is satisfied, you are perfectly eligible for visa free transits through Shanghai twice.
