Shanghai 144 hour visa

Our cruise ship in October departs from Japan and stops in Dalian, China Oct. 20, Tianjin Oct. 21-22, Qingdao Oct 24 then Shanghai Oct. 26. We want to stay an extra 3 days in Shanghai on our own before we fly to US. Will we be able to use 144 hour visa? Many hours of the time of our first stop on the 20th and leaving on the 29th will be on ship and at sea.
