About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Los Angeles / Shanghai / India

Hello,
I am a USA passport holder. While returning back from India to United States, I have a 16hrs layover in Shanghai. Do I need to apply for transit visa to get outside of airport or not? Thanks!!

Sara, you don't because you are perfectly covered by the 24h visa-free transit. To get outside of the airport, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport.

Leaving airport will be up to immigration discretion. If its overnight with a hotel you will have better luck.
