About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover in Beijing or shanghai

I'm traveling from the US to Japan and my layover is 5 hours in Beijing or 4 hours in Shanghai depending in which flight I book. It would be the same airline in and out of China. I don't plan on leaving the airport. My questions are...is a 4 hour layover long enough? Will I have to go through customs quarantine or immigration? And, as I dont plan on leaving the airport, do I need a visa just to be in the airport? I feel like because I'm not leaving I would just get off my arrival flight from the US and then walk with my carry-on bag through the international terminal to my next gate and just hang out til I board from there to Japan. Am I missing something?

Your layover times in both Beijing and Shanghai are fine and you will manage to catch your connecting flights without any problem. By the way, flying on the same airline implies that your luggage will be almost certainly checked all the way to your final destination. In case that your luggage is not checked all the way to your final destination, you will collect your luggage and easily perform new check-in. Don't worry, you have enough time to perform all the formalities. In any case, you are perfectly covered by 24 hours visa free transit, so you don't need any kind of visa even in case that you have to formally leave the transit area. Just keep in mind that in case that you have to leave the transit area you will formally apply for 24 hours free entry permit and you will exit the mentioned area to perform new check-in.
