About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need transit visa if not leaving airport?

Hi
Flying New Zealand to Shanghai with a transfer in Guangzhou (4 1/2hr in transit area). Depart Shanghai to Sth Korea the next day. Return from Sth Korea after 10 days back to Shanghai & fly same day to Guangzhou (2 1/2hr in transit area) transfer to flight back to NZ.
Will I need a transit visa if I stay within the transit area at Guangzhou International Airport?
Can I get a Transit visa to stay overnight in Shanghai before flying to Sth Korea?
Do I need transit visa for return trip through Shanghai & Guangzhou if I stay within transit areas?

Mark, you will easily find out whether you are eligible for 24 hours visa free transit or not. All you need is to count the number of hours from the time of your scheduled landing in Guangzhou until your scheduled departure from Shanghai. It is not important whether you have one or two stops within mainland China because 24 hours visa free transit allows multiple stops. The same thing is valid for your journey back.

In case that your first journey is under 24 hours, you will be able to apply for 24 hours free entry permit upon arrival in Beijing. There you will present your tickets and hotel booking along with filled form. Your permit will be granted almost certainly, you will exit the airport, have a sleep in your hotel and you will return tomorrow morning to continue your journey to South Korea.

In case that your itinerary is longer than 24 hours, you will have to apply for Chinese visa before your departure from New Zealand.
