About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US to Shanghai - Japan Cruise

I am travelling from US to Shanghai, where we will spend 48 hrs before ship sails from Shanghai to Japan. After seven days, the ship docks back in Shanghai, where we will fly home direct to US the same day. Is this itinerary eligible for 144-hour visa-free transit?

Yes, itinerary US - Shanghai - Japan and Japan - Shanghai - US is perfectly eligible for 144 and 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. You should just keep in mind that your first port call immediately after Shanghai is not in mainland China and also that your port just before arrival in Shanghai is also not in mainland China. Also, your flights US - Shanghai - US should be nonstop or at least they should not have layovers in Japan.
