About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Can I stay in Shanghai 144 hours either before visiting Taiwan, or after visiting Taiwan?

To whom it may concern:

I would like to visit both SH and Taipei. I have to be in Taipei June 2-7 - that is not flexible. I can be there longer if necessary, and I believe there is no visa requirement for Taiwan for Canadians.

I can either visit SH May 26 - June 1 OR June 9-15 - this is flexible.

Rule #2 states: "No. 2: The actual allowed stay length is calculated from 00:00 after the date of your entry, therefore you can maximize your stay by taking an early flight on the date of entry and a late flight on the date of exit."

Option #1:
Using the "144-hour Visa-free Transit" option, so no visa, can I arrive from Canada in SH on June 1 at 4PM local time, travel to Taipei June 2 around 9AM (its seems that is the only flight I can get on Air China based on when flights arrive into SH from Canada on June 2nd, which are all late afternoon), stay in Taipei June 2 to June 9, then come back to SH and stay there until June 15 and leave around 3PM.

A related question:
As the flight to Taipei is the transit flight, do the 9 or so hours that I would need to be at the airport hotel until the Sunday flight Count in the 144 hours?

OR

Option 2:
Do I have to spend the 144 hours in SH first, then travel to Taipei? So arrive from Canada in SH on June 2 around 4PM and stay there until June 8, and then go to Taipei?

A related question:
Do I need to go back to SH if I wind up taking Option#2? Or could I fly back to Canada directly from Taipei without coming back to SH - obviously, this would be easier.

Thank you

Mike.

In reality, everything is simple.

You can do like this:

Canada - SH (arrival June 1 at 4PM, departure June 2 at around 9AM) - Taipei (arrival June 2)

With the above itinerary you have fulfilled all the necessary criteria for 24 hours visa free transit and not 144 hours because your stay in SH (mainland China) will be less than 24 hours. In order to be left outside the airport you will apply for 24 hours free entry permit that will allow you to exit the airport and to have a normal sleep in a hotel. Please, always have a hard copy of your flight tickets and hotel booking.

Like this, you will arrive in Taipei completely visa free because Taiwan is nor requiring visas for Canadians. Also, the time you have spent in SH is reset and you can fly back to SH to enjoy totally new and unrelated to the first one visa free transit.

After your stay in Taiwan June 2-7 you can take a flight to SH and stay there for 144 hours visa free. Of course, you can maximize your stay in SH by arriving in the morning hours. After your stay in this Chinese region, you will depart for Canada.

Also, you can arrive from Canada to SH in late May, enjoy your 144 hours visa free transit there and depart for Taiwan on June 2. After your stay in Taiwan you can, of course, fly to Canada directly without returning to SH.

You have also a third option and that is to fly directly from Canada to Taiwan, stay there June 2-7, after that fly to SH, stay there for 144 hours visa free and return from SH directly to Canada.
