About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Complicated itinerary, apply for visa or not?

Hi, I'm from the Netherlands flying from Amsterdam to Shanghai in August. I'd like to spend 2/3 days in Shanghai before taking a train to Beijing where I'll stay another 2 days. From Beijing, my 5-day tour to North Korea departs, which ends in Beijing 5 days later. That same day my flight from Beijing to Kathmandu is scheduled and has a 10 hour layover/transit in Guangzhou, so I might want to leave the aiport for a couple of hours (not a must). Quite confused about the visa (free) rules with an itinerary like this. Can I go without a visa and if not, what (minor) adjustments must I make to be able to enter China without a visa?

You clearly need a visa in advance with this plan. Transit without visa allows transit in only one city/region if you want to stay more than 24 hours in China. To travel without a visa you will have to satisfy all 3 of the following: 1. You must fly to Beijing non-stop (and not go to Shanghai at all). 2. The time from your second arrival in Beijing to your departure from Guangzhou must be less than 24 hours. 3. You must travel to North Korea by air and not by rail. Otherwise you need a visa.
