About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

need clarification on 144 hrs visa free

Hi, my route would be HK - Shanghai - USA, which seems fine according to the post you have. But could HK count as my destination A even though it's not my country of origin? My country of origin is actually USA but I would be studying in HK for about 4 weeks (I have applied for a student visa for HK).

The term "original country" in the instructions is not an equivalent of the term "country of origin". It simply means the country in which you have started your journey. There's never a requirement for you to be traveling to or from your native country. To immigration, HK-Shanghai-US is the same as HK-Shanghai-Macau.
