Do we need to apply for the 144 days visa at the airport? Thank you!

We’re going on a Japan cruise & we’re arrving & boarding our ship in Shanghai & after the 7 days cruise, we’re departing at Shanghai airport!

The full itinerary is important air and seat. Its a 144 hour (6 day) transit without visa so its visa waiver and not a visa. Assuming its Shanghai > Japan > Shanghai and no other stops in mainland china its two separate transits:
UK > Shanghai (144 hours)> Japan
Japan > Shanghai (144 hours) > UK
