Apply Chinese Visa from third country

I’m an Australian passport holder currently travelling in Japan and planning to visit China from Tokyo, can I apply for Chinese visa from Japan?

Yes, I'm an Aussie residing in the US and have applied for Chinese tourist visa from the US Chinese Embassy. Make sure you also make a copy of your residency in Japan on top of a copy of your passport photo page.
