About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

What type of transit visa or exemption do we need

Flying to Phuket, Thailand, arriving Kunming China 7:55 AM July 7. 3 hour 5 minute layover in Kunming. Not leaving the airport. Depart Kunming 11:00AM July 7 arriving Shanghai SHA airport 2:10 PM. 21 hour 30 minute layover in Shanghai. Depart Shanghai PVG airport 11:40 AM July 8 to Chicago, IL USA. Must leave original airport in Shanghai, as we are flying out of a different airport in Shanghai.

Flying to Thailand, we have 23 hour 40 minute layover in Shanghai arriving from Chicago, departing directly to Phuket, Thailand. We would like to leave the airport and tour Shanghai during this layover.

What type of Visa/Exemption are we eligible for/need?

Your first flight itinerary: Phuket - Kunming - Shanghai - Chicago requires a prearranged Chinese visa because you will stay in China for more than 24 hours, so you are not eligible for 24 hours visa free transit and also not eligible for 144 hours visa free transit because you will have two stops within mainland China.

Your second flight itinerary: Chicago - Shanghai - Phuket is fine and you will easily use your stay for 24 hours visa free transit to obtain 24 hours free entry permit to explore the town. Please, keep in mind to have your flight tickets and accommodation booking in printed form ready to show it to relevant authorities.

Assuming that you are US citizens you will need a prearranged Chinese visa because your first itinerary: Phuket - Kunming - Shanghai - Chicago exceeds 24 hours (Kunming arrival on July 7 at 7:55 AM and departure from Shanghai on July 8 at 11:40 AM, so you are not qualified for 24 hours visa free transit. Also, you are not qualified for 144 hours visa free transit because you will have to consecutive stops in China, i.e. Kunming and Shanghai and that is not allowed.

Your second itinerary is just fine for 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai.

You should change your flights or invest in 10 years valid Chinese visa. You have quite a time to accomplish all the procedures for your Chinese visa, so it will be probably cheaper than to change your flights.
