Can I use 72 hour transit visa

Can I use 72 hour transit visa if I arrive by cruise ship and then leave by air but stay in a hotel for 2 nights . I have normal UK passport and we will be in Shanghai.

Alyson, as long as you are sure you don't have other layover in mainland China, you can enjoy the 144h visa-free transit in Shanghai.
