Transit visa required for Amsterdam-China-India route?

Hi,
I'll be returning to India from Amsterdam via China (Shanghai) with layover period of 15 hours in Shanghai. I intend to visit the city during that time. Do I need a visa for that?

Its up to immigration discretion if you can leave the airport during the 24 hour transit. If it's overnight with hotel should be fine. If it's daytime and no hotel you may be asked to spend the 15 hours inside the airport. No way to know in advance.

No, you do not. Upon your arrival you will apply for 24 hours entry permit that is based on the 24 hours visa free transit. In order to obtain an entry permit, you will supply your flight tickets and also your accommodation booking in printed form. You have to know that issuing of entry permit is at discretion of immigration official, but with hotel/hostel booking you will almost secure it.
