About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can i fly from japan to shanghai to Hong Kong all on a free visa?

i will spend a week in tokyo, then fly to shanghai for 2-3 days and fly to hong kong for 2-3 days and fly back to the US.

will i need an actual visa?
