About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling from JFK - Shaghai (16 hour layover) - Beijing (16 hour layover) - Final Destination (DPS)

I have two long layovers in Shanghai and Beijing. I was wondering if I qualify for the Visa free 72 hour travel as I will be in two cities for less than 24 hours.

Please help!!

You need a visa. Two stops in Shanghai and Beijing limits you to 24 hours transit without visa.

Two stops means you are limited to the 24 hour direct transit. You can only travel through a single transit zone when doing a transit of longer than 24 hours total in China.

There is no 72 hour visa. The 72 hours transit without visa allows transit in one city only. Your case is clear-cut: you must either get a visa or change your flights.

The article literally references 72 visa.... but okay. And i this is not clear cut. The US state department says otherwise

This article literally references a "72-Hour VISA-FREE Transit in China" and NOT a 72-hour visa. If you decide to get a visa before your travel at a cost of $140, then of course you can transit two cities for more than 24 hours. There is nothing more clear-cut than that. Also DOS's country info clearly states that "The duration of allowed stay and how broadly you may travel varies by region" which is not exactly a green light for you to travel either.

Jamie, if you don’t believe the replies here then you’re free to attempt your travel without a Chinese visa. I guarantee you won’t get further than JFK.
