About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Am I allowed to stay if I have a layover in Shanghai and I buy a new ticket for another day?

Basically my layover is in SH and I want to see the city, but I will miss my flight to LAX and have another ticket from SH to LAX for 3 days later. Also I live in mexico and have a ticket from LAX to mexico. It is transit because I was not planning on flying through SH and I want to make a visit, so I don’t know if this will work. Also the page for pre application does not work.

I had both tickets and the immigration agents kindly asked me which flight u wanted to take so I said the latter and they granted me my visa. I think it’s easier than you make it seem and they’re actually really nice about it and they are basically doing this to encourage tourism

You are not allowed to do that according to the rules. You have to fly out from Shanghai on the flight you have mentioned while filling in the form upon your arrival in Shanghai. After you have been granted your 144 visa free transit you could theoretically change the flight, but you should also have in mind that you could encounter possible problems including fines. Of course, it is always possible that you will be allowed to exit the country without being questioned and fined, but I would not count on that.
