About:China Transit Visa

Help please. I am flying in June to Shanghai to board a cruise to Japan.

I would like to avail the 72 hr visa free transit at the Shanghai airport. I read your rules listed above and I think I Qualify. However the cruise is going to Japan with stops there. I was planning on getting my free Japan visas on arrival in Japan. However this means when I am at Shanghai Airport trying to obtain the China 72 hr free visa at that point I will not have the Japan visas in my passport meaning I do not technically have yet the Chinese requirement for showing a visa to my next destination. What do you think? Will the officers at Shanghai give me the 72 hr free knowing that I get Japan visas free there when I arrive? I am worried since then I could be prevented from traveling to the cruise center to board my already payed for cruise.

Since 2017, Chinese Immigration no longer enforces visa requirements of other countries which is now solely the airline and cruise line's job. As an American you do not need a visa for Japan.
