In reality, Chinese border authorities will usually let you enter the country with the passport that has yet 3 months of validity, but this is, honestly speaking, playing a roulette because you could also be rejected. Trust me, you will definitely not going to receive any assurance on this forum because nobody knows what will be a decision of Chinese border authorities. In case that an embassy where you will obtain your visa will tells you that your passport is fine, you will be allowed to enter the country as you will be if some other country let you fly through China using 24, 72 or 144 hours visa free transit. When you arrive in China with the passport that you have mentioned, what will they do to with you, but let you transit the country! Anyway, who knows wheter the country of orgin will allow you to board the plane at the first place... Hard question, trust me.
