About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa possible?

I am flying to Hong Kong and staying over for one night. I am then flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai on the next day. On the way home I am flying CX from Shanghai via Hong Kong directly to Frankfurt. Does this qualify as entering from one country and going out to another?

You are flying Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong which is a visit to China (not a transit) and therefore requires a visa.

Thanks, Zupan. I am looking now to fly from Frankfurt to Hong Kong and leave the same day of arrival from Macau to Shanghai on a separate ticket. The return flight would be from Shanghai to Frankfurt via Hong Kong with Cathay. Would this work?

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to do that. According to the strict rules for Chinese visa free transits, you are traveling on the route Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong. It really doesn't matter the fact that Hong Kong on your onward journey is just a stopover.

So, to perform this trip, you need to apply for Chinese visa or to fly from Shanghai to Macau from where you can easily catch your flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt.
