About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa Free entry

I am flying into Shanghai, spending two nights there, then boarding a cruise ship and leaving China.
The ship will not visit anywhere else in China and the ship finishes in Sydney.
Can I use the 72 hour transit free scheme ?

Thank you for your reply ZUPAN.
Am I correct in thinking that I need to inform Heathrow Airport, check in, that I will be requesting the 144 hour visa free system and will they know what I am talking about ?
We leave Shanghai for Busan South Korea and then various other ports before going to Australia. The only other quest, is one port for the day is Hong Kong. Would going there make any difference ?
Thank you

It has been three years since the policy was first implemented, so most airlines flying to China should know their rules. If not, tell them to consult Timatic.

Definitely. Your itinerary is within the legal frame for 72 hours free travel. By the way, your arrival to Shanghai has to be from a third country (or territory like Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau) on non stop flight.

Just one correction. You will not apply for 72 hours, but for 144 hours visa free travel. This is very important to have in mind because 144 hours visa free travel allows you to exit China by ship while 72 hours don't. Once again, have this detail in mind. 144 hours free travel application!
