About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is a visa needed for transit of 5 hours?

I am a US citizen arriving from Bangkok to Shanghai (PVG), then a 5 hour layover before going onward to San Francisco. As I will not be leaving the airport, do I need any special visa?
