About:China Visa

F visa needed or not?

As as EU citizen under the visa waiver program, do I need an F visa when I go at the invitation of a Chinese university in Beijing to give a few talks? I have an invitation letter. Does this fall under the "exchange" (交流) part of the visa free entry program? Does it depend on whether the university pays an honorarium (laorofei) or not?

F visa is for no-paid exchanges which is also the valid purpose for the visa free entry. So, you don't need a visa if you are not paid, the visa free entry for Spanish citizen applies to you. You may contact the university to ensure the honorarium they give you is not a payment of labor and the talks are not business activities. And with the invitation letter, it's easy to get an F visa. If they recognize the talks business activities, then you need to obtain an M visa with the invitation letter.
