does this 144 hour visa free apply if i am staying in beijing for 5 days only?

Question

My girlfriend and I were going to try and travel from San Francisco to Beijing and back for a long weekend.  Do we need a visa?  Thank you for your help

Are you going from America to China and back to America? If yes, I think you may need to apply for China Tourist Visa. As I know, 144-hour visa-free transit is only available to those who have a short stay in China from A to C and A and C should be different countries or regions out of Mainland China.
