I have a flight to Beijing from Melbourne, 36 hr layover then on to nyc. But not direct, as it’s melbourne to qingdao, then a 2.5 hour layover to Beijing. But point of entry is Quindao, so I won’t be allowed to continue to Beijing to do my 36 hour layover, correct?

Correct, you don't qualify for 144 hours transit without visa. You either need a visa, or you need to change your flights so that you are in China for less than 24 hours.

that's what I thought. I didn't realize the flight to Beijing had a connector in Qingdao first, or I wouldn't have booked it. I am getting a Visa in the AM, so all good. Just cost me a couple hundred extra to stop off and see friends in Beijing =(
