Transfer in Shanghai Pudong Airport- immigration and bags?

Traveling from Chicago to Bangkok with a layover in PVG. United operates the first flight and Shanghai Airlines operates the second. Do I need to do immigration and recheck bags, or is there a way to get routed directly to the second flight without going through this?
