About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am traveling from US to Shanghai 20 hr layover then to India.

I have confirmed booking and also hotel booking. I can avail of free transit visa to get to my hotel. Do I need to check out my luggage? then Check it again? Or can my luggage be delivered directly to my final destination India. My onward flight is from the same airline China Eastern.

Talk to ground staff at the check-in counter to determine where you will pick up your luggage. Keep in mind that if you choose to tag them all the way to India (which is the default option) then there is a possibility that you cannot retrieve them in Shanghai.

I do not need my luggage and will just take the hand carry with change of clothes, so do I need to check in then check out my luggage? with 21 hrs layover and just to get to the hotel?
