About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have read conflicting information, does Guangzhou and Shenzen offer 72 hour transit free?

i want to fly from phuket into one of these airports then catch a train to Hong Kong and fly out of there to Japan. I am Australian

You need a tourist visa for this trip.
Guangzhou offer a 72h twov (it's not a transit visa) but you can't leave China by train just by flight.
Shenzhen just offer a 24h twov but it's not available when you leave for HK or Macau.
