About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Tickets. Do I need to buy them all at the same time?

I’m planning to go from Beijing, where I’m staying right now with a student visa, to Japan for a couple of days; after that I’d like to come back here for one day, just to check out of my house and then go back to Europe. So it would be Japan-Beijing-Europe. My concern is about the tickets.

When you fly back from Japan tp Beijing you definitely need your ticket to Europe otherwise they won't let you transit in China.

Yeah of course. What I meant was: do I need to buy the tickets at the same time? Because I aldready have the ticket to go back to Europe, but I don’t have the one for Japan. Do they check if the tickets were purchased together?

Separate tickets are fine as long as you provide an onward ticket when checking in. Keep in mind that leaving the airport when using the 24-hour TWOV is at immigration's discretion unless you are switching terminals. To avoid being refused entry to the country you can either stretch your layover to more than 24 hours, or book flights that do not arrive and depart under the same terminal.
