Layover visa. Hi sir I have indian passport

i am coming from usa to india and will have 20 hour layover shanghai(china). I want to get out in the city and come back to catch my flight. Do i need a transit visa. If yes how to apply it

Leaving the airport without a visa for a layover under 24 hours is at the immigration officer's discretion.Some reported that bringing a hotel reservation will help. If you do not intend to leave the airport then you are fine.
