About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does 144-hour exemption apply to Hong Kong-Shanghai-Macau?

Would it be possible to, say, take the sleeper train from Hung Hom station in Hong Kong to Shanghai, stay in Shanghai for a few days, and then conclude the trip in Macau? After all, Hong Kong and Macau are different A and C destinations, and each can be used as an A or C destination.

Train from Hong Kong to Shanghai requires a visa since immigration formalities are handled in Hong Kong

Although this is certainly the case with the high-speed train out of West Kowloon, I do not believe there are mainland Chinese immigration procedures at Hung Hom station for the through sleeper train - presumably just ordinary Hong Kong emigration procedures.

You don't need a visa when traveling on the sleeper train since you will be clearing Chinese immigration in Shanghai, although you have to make sure that your Shanghai-Macau flight does not stop anywhere else in Mainland China.
