Transit through Guangzhou with 13 hour layover

We are a Canadian family transiting through Guangzhou to Cambodia. We have a 13 hour layover and would like to take advantage of their free accommodation. Do we need to apply for a transit visa and if so do we need to apply before arriving or is it all done at the airport?

You can apply for 24h twov in Guangzhou after arrival, and you are allowed to leave the airport.
