24 hr transit without visa

I am an Indian citizen and will be traveling from Toronto to India via shanghai, do I need entry permit to go out of the airport ? As I have a long layover in shanghai and would be looking for a hotel, is visa required?

If you have hotel reservation, you would be allowed to leave the airport.
