About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arrive Beijing by plane, leave by train to Hong Kong

If we arrive in Beijing from the UK and then travel to Hong Kong by plane two days later, I understand that we don't need a visa. However, if we decide to take the express train to Hong Kong from Beijing, do we than need entry permit? thanks!

You need a visa if travelling by high-speed rail. You do not if traveling on the conventional overnight train (# Z97/Z98).
