About:First Time China

Is this eligible for the 144 hour exemption?

Canadian Citizens flying non-stop Vancouver to Shanghai Mar 2. Arrive Mar 3 and go directly to cruise ship that day. Mar 4 cruise ship sails. First stop is Japan on Mar 6. Ship goes to Korea, more Japan, and Taiwan before ending in Hong Kong. Fly home non-stop from Hong Kong. Is a China Visa required, or are we covered by the 144 hour Visa Free Transit?
