Travelling to multiple cities in China - visa requirement

Hi there I am travelling from New Zealand to Shanghai for 3 nights then on to Xian for 2 nights. I then travel to HK, Macau and back to New Zealand. The Air China site is advertising 144 hours free transit for Shanghai and Xian but not sure if this will apply given we are visiting two difference cities and it states the free visa is only applicable if you stay within those cities and transit out. Would this still be considered a transit situation? Any assistance would be most appreciated. Many thanks Lori

You cannot use free transit policy. You need a visit visa for that beforehand.
