About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

US citizens flying from US to China to Japan

Hello! I appreciate this question and answer portion for this!

Do you know if the 72 hour twov is for 3 consecutive days or can it be broken up?

We have round trip tickets from the US to PEK but are only flying thru China to stay for 30hours before heading onward to Japan. After Japan we are flying back thru China back into PEK(not leaving the airport) to catch our connecting flight to Chongqing(20 hour night layover) before heading home to the US. Does the 72 hour twov apply and/or the 24 hours because it is two separate trips not equaling 72 hours? Thank you for your help!

On your way to Japan you qualify for the 144h twov in Beijing.

On your way back it depends how long do you stay in China.
If your stay is under 24h (from scheduled arriving time in Beijing to scheduled departure in Chongqing)
you're fine, if it's over 24h you need a visa.

Thank you for your reply. Would we apply for the 72 hour twov if the trip home is more than 24 hours? Would we do this at the PEK airport also?

If you have two stops in China you are immediately limited to 24 hours. Otherwise you need a visa in advance. By the way, it is 72/144hr transit without visa, it is not a visa.
