About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying into Shanghai, leaving via cruise ship, do i need visa?

I am flying into Shanghai and leaving via a cruise ship within 36 hours. 1 US citizen, 1 Canadian citizen.

You don't if your flight does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China and your cruise does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China either.

as long as u do not leave shanghai area and leave within 144 hours of arrival in china you do NOT need a visa

Just make sure the first port after Shanghai is not China and not the country your flight to Shanghai last departed from. For instance USA > Japan > Shanghai by plane and Shanghai > Japan by boat would not be eligible.
