About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Beijing-nanjing-Sydney

On my way to Sydney is it possible to stay in Beijing for 72 hours then take a flight that transits in Nanjing?
Says it’s a technical stop and we won’t be leaving airport (2 hours.)

That is not allowed and you must get a visa or change your flight so it doesn't stop in another Mainland Chinese city. Rule of thumb is that you must always pass inbound and outbound immigration in the region approved for the visa-free stay, and since in this case you are passing immigration in Nanking, which is outside Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, you must get a visa.
