Australian Passports travelling from Japan to Australia via Shanghai

Hi there,
I am very confused about visas.
My family and I will be returning to Australia from Japan for holidays.
However we have an 8 hour layover in Shanghai landing in at Hongqiao International airport (SHA) and we need to transit through Shanghai to Pudong International Airport (PVG) in order to fly out to Australia.

Do we need Transit (G) visa, since we have to leave the airport to check in at another airport?
Or does our route qualify for the 24 hour twov, entry permit?
Also how do we apply for one? and should or can we apply before we leave for our trip?

Also what is the best transport options travel between the 2 airports?
And roughly how long?

I know this is a lot, but when you're travelling with family you have to be prepared, thank you so much.

You don't need a transit G type as you can apply the 24h twov in Shanghai. Apply for 24-hour visa-free entry permit in 4 steps: Fill an Arrival/Departure Card at the border inspection counter; Get the temporary entry permit stamp or sticker; Claim the luggage (if needed); Go through the customs. You can take Airport Line 1 from Hongqiao to reach the Pudong airport. The car journey is Hongqiao Traffic Hub East Center → Pudong Airport T1. Frequency: 20 ~ 30 minutes; Duration: 1 hour; Ticket Fare: CNY 30
